The Guardian Fall Team Blog

Well, you’ve made it!  The 2017 National Safety Stand-Down is almost in the books!  We appreciate your participation, and for following along with us as we take the message of fall protection awareness to the masses! Hopefully this week you have realized the importance of staying vigilant while working at height, and this has inspired you to take your own education to the next level.

It’s not only a great way to increase safety for yourself but believe me, once you become more aware of fall hazards, proper use of equipment, inspections, etc., you won’t be able to go a single day without the urge to help fellow workers straighten up their act.

Leonardo da Vinci said, “When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward; for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” That’s a rather poetic way to say that once you have been exposed to something profound, it will always stay with you, no matter where you go. The same goes for safety. Once you know how to recognize a fall hazard, or spot equipment misuse, you just can’t ignore it.  In a strange way, if you recognize something and don’t do anything about it, you become a sort of accessory to the crime, for lack of a better word. It’s not nagging or bossy to point out a problem – it’s your duty. At least it should be.

A challenge: Use the springboard of this week’s Safety Stand-Down to take your own knowledge one step further. The best way I can think of is to become a recognized Competent Person. Every jobsite should have one, and there is no reason it can’t be you! Hey, even your humble correspondent has taken Competent Person training, and let me tell you, I can’t walk by a construction site without seeing something. Do yourself a favor – dedicate your near future to increasing your fall protection knowledge; it’ll pay off in ways you can’t imagine.

HART Height and Rescue Training by PSG is pleased to offer training from Authorized and Competent Person, to Rescue and Confined Space. We even have a growing series of online training offerings to serve those who don’t have the opportunity to attend an in-person class. No matter which way you go, you can be confident the training has been created by industry experts here at Guardian with an eye toward the practical application of fall protection and safety.
