The Barton Springs Apartments project was brought to Engineered Service Group (ESG) with a pour date already set in motion. In order to bypass the critical path of the project’s pour date, ESG proposed an epoxy connection to be utilized for the custom CB-1-B and Rigging Sleeve anchor rather than a standard cast-in-place connection. The ESG team designed, fabricated, and internally tested these anchors and rigging sleeves to the standards provided by a stamped engineered design.

The connection design specified by the PE stamped shop drawings provided by ESG calls out a 5” minimum embedment depth and a 4.5” minimum embedment depth for the HILTI HIT-HY 200 adhesive anchor for the rigging sleeves and CB-1-B, respectively. However, onsite concrete conditions limited this embedment depth to 4” in the worst case scenario. In order to verify the 4” embedment depth achieves ANSI / IWCA complaint connection strength, a pull test was mandated and coordinated by ESG.

Upon receiving word of the concrete conditions, the ESG Project Management and Engineering Team shipped overnight a HydraJaws Pull Test Kit to the jobsite, where the ESG certified installer tested each anchor to a minimum force of 2500 lbs, per IWCA specified testing procedures. Based on the conclusions of the load test performed, it was verified that the tie-back anchor installations tested are structurally adequate to withstand the loads of suspended maintenance when used in accordance with Guardian Fall Protection specifications and ANSI/IWCA i-14.1 Window Washing Equipment.
